A Press pot what is it?

History:
Originally this coffee making method comes from France. A press pot is also known as a French Press or cafetière. The first press pots were introduced around 1840. Around 1930 the first stainless steal models were introduced. In the seventies the first metal and glass models were put on the market by a brand called Bodum.
This is one of the most important brands for the development of the press pot. This is one of the reasons why we sell this brand at our CoffeeStore.
How does it work?
It's actually quit simple. A glass cylinder is filled with (freshly roasted) grounded coffee. Always use coarse ground coffee. On top of the grounded coffee hot water is poured. Caution! The water has to be boiled but not boiling anymore, around 96 degrees. The coffee and the water need to be mixed thoroughly with a plastic spoon (in the instructions on the right you can read why) Let the coffee brew for at least 4 minutes. Now it's time to gently push the plunger (metal safe) down. Always do this in a slow manner. You want to makes sure the hot water doesn't come out of the press pot on top of your hands or elsewhere. Hmm, you're already done making the coffee. It's ready to be served.
How do I get the best result?
All the parts of your press pot need to be cleaned thoroughly. Just like with any other coffee making method it's very important that you use freshly roasted coffee beans. If you are making coffee with a press pot we advise you to use one of our light roasted coffees. For example you could try our Panama Finca Lerida. Use a coarse ground coffee. To decide the best grind you should try and taste the result until you are satisfied.

Bodum instructions:
1. Place the pot on a dry, flat non-slip surface. Hold the handle firmly and pull the plunger unit straight up and out of the pot.
2. For each cup (1,25 dl/4 oz) put 1 rounded table spoon of coarse ground coffee into the pot. CAUTION! Use only coarse ground coffee. Fine grind can clog the filter and create a high pressure. Place the press pot on a heat proof, non-slip surface.
3. Pour hot (not boiling) water into the pot. Leave a minimum of 2,5 cm/1 inch of space at the stop. Stir the brew with a plastic spoon. CAUTION! Metal spoons can scratch or chip the glass causing it to break.
4. Place the plunger unit on top of the pot. Turn the lid to close off the pour spout opening. Do not press down yet. Let the coffee brew for at least 4 minutes.
5. Hold the pot handle firmly with the spout turned away from you. Apply slight pressure on the knob using only the weight of your hand to lower the plunger straight down into the pot. Lowering the plunger with minimal pressure produces the best results. If the filter clogs or it becomes difficult to push down the plunger you should remove the plunger from the pot, stir the brew and than slowly plunge again.
6. Turn the lid to open the pour spout and then pour the coffee
7. Unscrew the filter assembly and clean the plunger after each time you used it.
All parts can be put into the dishwasher.
