Highest price ever paid for coffee!
Yesterday night during the internet auction of the Panamanian Hacienda Esmeralda Geisha Coffee of Premium and Reserve quality, coffee history was written on the Stoneworks internet coffee auction website. Coffee roaster Barend Boot of Boot Koffie /The Golden Coffee Box managed to obtain a small Premium lot of the special Geisha Arabica coffee bean for the Netherlands.
What makes it so special?
For the first time in history such a large amount of special Arabica coffee is sold at once by a small coffee farm from Panama to coffee roasters from the USA, Japan, Taiwan, The Netherlands and Oslo. Yesterday afternoon the auction started at 03.30 pm and lasted until 01.00 am this morning. 10 batches of the entire crop were split up into smaller lots and auctioned in two groups: Reserve and Premium quality. In total that's over 6000 kilo of Geisha coffee beans. A small amount of the reserve quality was sold for 130 USD per 450 gram last year. For four years in a row this coffee has been sold for the largest amount of money. Yesterdays auction (May 22nd 2008) is a turning-point for coffee farmers. It shows that more coffee farms are able to receive a great price for their large amounts of Arabica coffee outside of the Cup of Excellence auctions. The production of special qualities does pay off also in large amounts.
Apparently the number of people on this planet willing to pay a high price for a special pack of coffee is increasing. This way small coffee farms are following in the footsteps of the increasing viticulture diversity and certification.
This year's auction is very different from previous years.
This year's Esmeralda Geisha coffee auction on Stoneworks is very different from previous years. During the previous auctions chosen coffee farms offered (small) amounts of coffee. During the auction of the
Esmeralda Geisha coffee just one coffee farm offered 10 different batches from one coffee selection. 60 bidders registered for the auction this year. The is the double amount of bidders compared to last year.
